4 members of ICRS took a train to Bath to see the RepRap labs yesterday - RepRap Website. If you haven't heard of a RepRap before, it is a largely self-replicating 3D printer capable of achieving exceptional results at an extremely low price (£300 for a RepRap Mendel as opposed to a £10,000 for the cheapest commercial 3D printer).
They met with some of the people involved in the design of the machine, including Dr Adrian Bowyer, to get a better idea of how the machine works and what is involved in making your own.
We have ordered all the parts for a RepRap and should have one built and printing parts within 1 month. This is exciting stuff! Next year the 3D printer will prove invaluable as a tool for making parts for our society's robots.
