Trip to Bath University for the RepRap team

E-mail Print PDF

4 members of ICRS took a train to Bath to see the RepRap labs yesterday - RepRap Website. If you haven't heard of a RepRap before, it is a largely self-replicating 3D printer capable of achieving exceptional results at an extremely low price (£300 for a RepRap Mendel as opposed to a £10,000 for the cheapest commercial 3D printer).

They met with some of the people involved in the design of the machine, including Dr Adrian Bowyer, to get a better idea of how the machine works and what is involved in making your own.

The team at Bath University

We have ordered all the parts for a RepRap and should have one built and printing parts within 1 month. This is exciting stuff! Next year the 3D printer will prove invaluable as a tool for making parts for our society's robots.

Some great sources of information on the RepRap are at the following websites:

IET Robot Wars

E-mail Print PDF

The IET recently held a Robot Wars competition at Savoy place.

The aim was to build a robot using Lego NXT which could solve a maze and then race them against each other with points also given for engineering and creativeness.

The ICRS team went for the old-fashioned right-wall following approach which proved too inefficient to win, but we all had a fantastic time!

Oliver got everyone into the mood by donning some tribal attire.

As part of UK ScienceFest 2010, the Maker Faire came to Newcastle this March and some members from ICRS decided to check it out! Everyone had lots of fun, and robots were aplenty.

Oliver and Pedro got uncomfortably close to this robot horse. Did I mention it also breathes fire?!

Overall it was a great day and maybe ICRS can not only spectate, but exhibit in the next UK Maker Faire! Just maybe...
